Chapter Three

JB sat on the bed and worked on his love song. Memories of his time with Raine floated through his mind as he sang. The familiar feel of Buster lying against his leg helped him focus while he sat in the luxurious suite and sank into his music.

He didn’t know how much time had passed before a knock sounded on the door and snapped him out of his musical daze.

JB cleared his throat. “Come in.”

Expecting food, he blinked in surprise when Wrin walked through the door. The expression in Wrin’s eyes had JB’s heart sinking to his feet.

“What happened? Where’s Raine?” JB could barely ask over the lump in his throat.

“He’s missing,” Wrin confessed.

“What do you mean, missing?” Maybe he’d misunderstood. Maybe the word meant something else in the fae world, like wandered off but would return soon. He gave Wrin a hopeful look, willing him to explain.

“I don’t know. Mother said he left to return to you, but Cline said he never arrived. I came to bring you food and discovered his absence.”

Somehow JB had missed the tray of food in Wrin’s hands.

His stomach growled, reminding him he hadn’t eaten yet today. When Wrin set it down on the table, JB picked at his food, but barely tasted it as his mind spun over where Raine could’ve gone. Panic pounded through his chest.

“Who would’ve taken him? How could they have taken him? Isn’t he some sort of all-powerful fae?” Wouldn’t a prince have to be stronger than the others? It always worked that way in stories. Fear and anger battled for attention inside him. He didn’t know what kind of abilities Raine had, but the cautious way the others had watched him had JB thinking his lover didn’t lack in the magic department.

Wrin shrugged. “He’s stronger than most, but there are different types of abilities.”

“What makes you think he’s missing? I mean he could just be visiting an old friend.” Even while he said the words, he knew they were wrong. His lover wouldn’t leave him alone in a strange place just to go off and chat with other people. Raine would’ve come and retrieved JB first to introduce him.

“What can we do? How can we find him?”

“I sent a message to Mother. She’ll mobilize the guards to search for him. I believe he might have been kidnapped by his enemies, people who want Mother to stay on the throne.”

JB stood and started pacing back and forth, almost tripping over Buster as he tried to wear a spot in the stone floor. He always thought better on his feet.

“What should I do? I mean, I want the queen to stay on the throne too. I don’t want to be a consort or anything. I want to go back home and go to crappy auditions and lay in bed on Sundays and listen to Raine grumble about the world.” It didn’t occur to him until that moment that Raine probably had a better idea about being a ruler than most of the people running the world above.
